How to Achieve Work-Life Balance: Three Ways to Work and Live Well

Let’s be honest: If you’re a successful attorney or make your living in the high-pressure legal support services industry, you’re probably accustomed to working long hours.

Most likely, you’ve missed birthday parties, Sunday brunches, soccer games, and school conferences. Maybe your work schedule is even keeping you from maintaining your physical health and well-being.

There’s a fundamental idea that in order to have a successful and thriving legal career, the greatest success is given to those who eat, sleep, and breathe law, and those who are the first to arrive and the last to leave the office every day.

  1. Define your priorities. First, take a close look at your values; what’s important to you? If your priorities line up with those core values, and support their existence, you’re probably achieving a pretty good balance.
  2. Identify your distractions. Do you ever decline a work-related task? It may be time to say no to work that doesn’t fuel your energy levels and gets in the way of your already long to-do list. Multi-tasking is another culprit to inhibiting your productivity, and we all know that electronic interruptions can steal hours right from under your thumb.
  3. Develop boundaries. Your career will take as much time as you allow it to take. There will always be another case to handle, another deposition to direct, and deadlines around every corner. Strive to keep office hours and communicate them to the rest of your firm, and make a serious attempt not to do anything work-related outside of those hours.
